Very interesting what you have to say about the DNA booby prize.

The Rev'd in the YouTube clip is remarkable, I think, in that he pulls no punches. "Living that fast life comes to this, right down here." She died like a fool. It certainly seems to have a salutary effect on his younger listeners.

Yep, let's keep talking about it!

Charles, I feel the same way as you, detached but very interested in the way the situation will go and the way my own feelings will develop. A state of limbo of sorts - but sometimes also like being in the bar of the Titanic, having a drink but half-waiting for the warning bell to go off.

'not with a bang, not even a whimper' - yes, exactly - death as nothing. How odd.

I like your prediction that a concentration of minds and real efforts will come together when needed. Perhaps I just believe that this should be starting NOW.

I find myself very much a detached spectator at the moment. I am waiting to see which way my thinking inclines. Our present 'not with a bang, not even a whimper' approach to death and dying is curious indeed. And I agree with you: it does not answer the magnitude of the occasion, because even when death does not come with the force of catastrophe, it still creates a gigantic absence and asks a gigantic question. The gigantic question - the what's it all about question.

How did we come to this? I can't figure it out. Some sort of psychological 'splitting off'?

As you say, the floodgates are about to burst. Then we shall see a concentration of minds and real efforts to work it all out, make some sense, do what needs to be done.

I admire very much your minatory tone.

I only partly agree with you, Charles, on your point about the "earthly vale of tears" having stimulated the creation of our visions of the after-life.

Yes, the need for faith is evidently returning where life has become tough again. And those earthly difficulties are rapidly becoming a universal condition - so look for all sorts of new religious solutions and false prophets n the next decades. In regions with longer enjoyment of the good times, it may take longer for the awareness of a new need to sink in - we're simply not used to looking for spiritual solutions any longer. We still look to the economists, scientists and doctors. On the other hand, our moral bankrupcy is almost certainly a lot deeper than in the poorer countries.

Agreed. It's a town planning issue, too. And a very important one. Get death back from the margins into the mainstream - the undertakers, the burial grounds...

Yes! The men and women of science have it that we all die of a disease -- that death happens because something wasn't fixed in time.

We die because we die.

Thank you for this. very nourishing to my own thinking!
